Parksville International Kite Festival

July 15th-16th, 2006

The first annual Parksville International Kite Festival was enjoyed by hundreds of spectators July 15 and 16. The weather was warm, the wind steady, and the clean grassy field proved to be a perfect space to fly in.

The festival was extremely well organized by the Parksville Lions Club in association with the BCKA. Some of the highlights included a kite making workshop and Teddy Bear Drop. The Japanese Rokkaku battle was a hit, as well as the dual and quad line kite demos. The colourful display of kites and banners were enjoyed by all as well.

A large contingent of BCKA members made the trek across the waters from the mainland to attend this event and lend their support. They were greeted each morning with Tim Bits, muffins and coffee from Tim Horton’s. A yummy way to start each day!

Cliff and Gerry Pennell from Olympia Washington ran the Teddy Bear drop, challenging many children’s skills at “bear catching”. DJ Patrick Nicholson from radio station 99.9 mc’d the event and kept the spectators entertained with a wide selection of music.

A special thank you to Lion Clarence Esslinger and John and Marzlie Freeman for spearheading this event, as well as the many others who volunteered their time and energy to help make this event such a success.

Hoping to see you all next year!
